NIOINONNO is made only from plant-derived materials. Plants possess aromatic compounds called flavonoids, which function as deodorants by absorbing and breaking up substances that produce bad odors. If a bad odor is caused by the decomposition of various food substances by microorganisms such as fungi and bacteria, the bacteriostatic effect the flavonoids in NIOINONNO inhibits the activity of these microorganisms, thereby eliminating the bad odor. Where the odor-causing substances are diffused in the air, the flavonoids act stabilize (or “chelate”) the these substances, thereby eliminating bad odor. This effect is particularly strong in the case of flavonoids from camellias.

The flavonoids contained in NIOINONNO have an antioxidant effect. They function as antioxidants for substances that generate bad odors through oxidation reactions. Flavonoids also reduce the pH of alkaline odor-causing substances. The organic acid from wood sorrels is considered to be effective in this reduction process.

Because NIOINONNO is made entirely from plant-derived materials, it produces a fresh scent that is evocative of a pleasant woodland. For this reason, the smell produced by NIOINONNO leaves a pleasant sensation in the human nose.
